Daily Breeze Opinion: Al Muratsuchi for Assembly District 66

September 10, 2020

Besides a two year period from 2014 to 2016, Al Muratsuchi has represented the South Bay’s Assembly District 66 since 2012.

We don’t agree with Muratsuchi on everything, but we appreciate his relatively moderate approach to the office and the problems facing the state.

Muratsuchi is a critic of the high-speed rail project, an opponent of massive tax increases during the pandemic and a supporter of making it easier to build housing.

In a state Legislature dominated by a spendthrift supermajority, California could use more Democrats like Muratsuchi who recognize the folly of raising taxes in a time like this and recognize that there are better uses of finite resources than the bullet train.

Muratsuchi’s challenger, Arthur Schaper is best known for his activism against California’s “sanctuary” laws limiting state law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials. For a purple district like the 66th, we think Muratsuchi is most reflective of the district.

Muratsuchi’s relatively moderate stance on fiscal policy, coupled with his support for overdue policing reforms, make him well situated to get some good things done in the Legislature while also checking the tax-and-spend impulses of many of his colleagues.

We endorse Al Muratsuchi.
